No matter how long one has been a supervisor, it's never an easy task to evaluate the way subordinates do their jobs. Some are friends, others may not be liked because of personality conflicts or personal differences. If supervisors give too much praise they'll find employees using their comments to support claims that the employee automatically deserves a higher salary. On the other hand, if supervisors are overly critical they stifle an employee's potential to achieve. Worse still is the supervisor who never takes advantage of the performance appraisal process.
