Concentrated
Resources Management tm
CRM:
Read Before Use
The
package that your facility has purchased, i.e., Workplace Violence, Concentrated
Resources Management tm is a complete system that an organization can
use to design and implement a high energy, high quality approach to reducing the
occurrence of Workplace Violence and the severity of potential incidents.
This is not a simple
"band-aid" approach to the problem of Workplace Violence. No one
department can realistically apply this model. That is not to say that there
isn’t significant value even to an isolated department in this package. The
policies, procedures and instruments provided would allow an isolated department
to at least develop a high quality short term response to Workplace Violence. We
urge you, however, to do your best to avoid this practice. Workplace Violence is
confronted and dealt with effectively only when the entire organization commits
to doing so.
There are several key
issues to be addressed here. First and foremost is the commitment referred to
above. On receipt of this package please print all files contained on this
diskette, preferably in their .DOC format (Microsoft Word tm ). Communicorp
unconditionally guarantees the quality of the diskette and will be quick to
provide a replacement if it is found defective.
Each file is also
provided in a .TXT format for use by those without access to "Word".
Using the .txt format will cause you to lose almost all formatting commands and
therefore you will invest some serious time making your documents look good.
Communicorp
Incorporated can supply hard copies of all documents to act as duplicating
masters, if so desired. There is a $29.95 charge for this service and it can be
arranged by calling 800-367-9274.

standards.
II. Plan
for Use of the Materials
A
recommended strategy for use of this material would be as follows:
- Print all documents.
- Review all
documents.
- Watch the video
segments in the order that they appear on the tape. Part One is nineteen
minutes long and is designed to be shown to every employee in the
organization. Part one is followed by 60 seconds of blue screen. Part two is
designed to be viewed by supervisors, security, human resources personnel,
employee assistance personnel and those eligible to watch part three. Part
two is also nineteen minutes long and followed by one minute of blue screen.
Note that there are handouts that can be used specifically with parts one
and two to reduce the amount of note-taking and act as catalysts for
discussion and further activity. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT NO HANDOUTS
BE GIVEN TO VIEWERS UNTIL AFTER THEY HAVE WATCHED THE TAPE. Part three of
the video is a message directed toward the purchaser, the executive of the
organization and persons selected to lead the Workplace Violence program at
the site. Part three is 12 minutes in length.
- Having reviewed the
video and the handout materials, make a presentation to the highest level
possible in your organization in order to explain to them the CRM
model and the efforts that are going to be required to implement this
program.
- The Executive with
responsibility for
CRM will then
appoint the Workplace Violence Coordinating Team which will in turn appoint
the Prevention and Services Team and the Crisis Response Team.
Membership on these
teams are at the pleasure of the site, but obviously Human Resources,
Employee Assistance, Security, Safety and other relevant professionals would
be logical members.
- These committees
carry out their mandates in terms of policy and procedure development,
site assessment and development of a Workplace Violence confidential hotline
or the equivalent.
- Once these systems
are in place, training for those who should watch only Part Two and Part One
(both) is then carried out. Again, this group includes supervisors, line
security and safety staff, line human resources staff, and department heads.
- Having trained the
level two group, then sessions need to be scheduled with all employees
whereby they will view PART ONE , only, of the video and then spend
SUBSTANTIAL time with presenters from the Prevention and Services Team and
the Crisis Response Team discussing the commitment of the organization,
confidentiality, reporting threats, response to a violent incident, local
policies and procedures, etc.
- Finally, the two key
teams carry out their mandate of prevention, service and response. In
addition, they gather data about the success of their efforts, review
incidents, modify the site’s response systems as needed and then carryout
new employee training and annual refresher training of all employees.
CRM is
not a simplistic approach to WORKPLACE VIOLENCE. It will require planning,
coordination and cooperation. It is a classic opportunity for various
professions to interact, support each other and learn the value of each
other’s skills.
